Airdrieonians chief admits coronavirus SPFL shut down could impact club budget next term

Airdrieonians director of football Stuart Millar says the League One shut down amid coronavirus fears could hit the club hard next term.

The Diamonds had been set to travel to Forfar tomorrow but the every game in Scotland has now been called off as part of a joint decision between the SFA and SPFL.

This morning the response group axed the weekend of games, which was set to start in Motherwell tonight, stating "in the interests of the health and safety of players, match officials, staff, supporters and the general public" having last night announced all games would go ahead.

New Broomfield supremo backed a safety first approach to the COVID-19 outbreak but said it could have a lasting impact on the League One title-challengers.

Millar said: "As as a club we are naturally disappointed that no football will take place in the near future but totally understand why the SFA have taken this decision which in my opinion is 100 per cent correct, bearing in mind the well-being of all parties involved.

Airdrie could be one of many clubs told to play games behind closed doors (John Steven)

"Personally I wouldn't want games played behind closed doors as the game is all about the fans.

"Financially as a club we will need to deal with the situation but it is far from ideal and ultimately might have an effect on next season budget.

"At this moment the health of the public is of far greater importance than what may or may not happen in the future."
