Airdrie ward election candidates announced by Labour

Airdrie and Shotts Labour party has announced the first of its candidates for May’s local government elections.

North Lanarkshire Council leader Jim Logue will again be standing in Airdrie Central, and will be joined on the ballot paper for the ward by 22-year-old party colleague Chris Costello.

The ward returns four councillors and is currently represented by SNP duo David Stocks and Nancy Pettigrew and Trevor Douglas of the Conservatives alongside Councillor Logue.

Airdrie resident Mr Costello, a former member of the Scottish youth parliament, said: “It’s an honour to have been selected to stand for Labour in the area I have lived in my entire life.

“There is no greater privilege than standing to represent your fellow residents; and as a younger candidate, I hope to encourage young voters to come out and vote on the issues that impact them.”

Councillor Logue has been an elected representative for more than four decades and has been the council leader for almost six years, and added: “I’m delighted to be standing for re-election in 2022.”

Voters across North Lanarkshire will go to the polls on Thursday, May 5, to choose the 77 councillors who will represent the authority’s 21 wards.

Election day in 2017 saw the SNP return 33 councillors and Labour 32, while a new 10-strong Conservative group was formed, with the remaining two councillors being independents.

Changes and by-elections since then mean that the current political composition of the council is 31 Labour members, 26 SNP, nine independents, eight Conservatives and three Alba party councillors.
