Airdrie villages benefit from lottery funding for community projects

Community projects in four areas of Airdrie have been boosted with news of a bumper lottery cheque for an action-planning project.

A three-year grant of £148,000 has been made to Community Action Lanarkshire (CAL) to help develop wellbeing initiatives in eight rural communities across the county.

Now residents in Caldercruix, Greengairs, Plains and Upperton will be able to use their share of the funding to put into practice the projects suggested during residents’ work to suggest future developments for their areas.

CAL manager Kirsten Robb said: “We’re grateful to everyone for their support for this application, and excited to continue working with local people and partners to take forward community-led action plans.”

The Lanarkshire-wide project is part of the Rural Development Trust, and helped rural communities develop plans for local improvements ranging from play parks and community gardens to establishing youth groups and tackling environmental issues.

Trust managing director Gordon Muir said: “We’re delighted that the National Lottery community fund has recognised the efforts which communities and staff have put into developing this project.

“CAL will be able to provide these rural communities with support to deliver projects which will improve their areas.”

National Lottery community fund Scotland director Neil Ritch said: “In these uncertain times, our priority is to ensure that National Lottery money continues to flow to charities, voluntary sector organisations and grassroots groups.

“This is an important project which will support people now and in the future when they can physically come back together to make great things happen in their community.”
