Airdrie thug left man permanently scarred after glass bottle attack

A THUG who smashed a gin bottle over a man’s head, leaving him permanently scarred, will be sentenced later this month.

Airdrie Sheriff Court heard last month how Clark Rankin, 47, attacked his victim on Target Road, Airdrie, on May 18 last year by hitting him with the glass bottle to his severe injury.

Fiscal depute Annette Ward said: “At 11.30pm on this Saturday night, the victim left Craigneuk community centre with friends and was walking along the street when he saw Rankin, who was known to him.

“There was a confrontation during which a glass bottle was struck by Rankin on the victim’s head, causing him to fall to the ground.

“An ambulance was called as he was bleeding heavily from face and head injuries sustained.

“He had cuts to the side of his face, near an eye, as well as to his head and lip. There was also a cut on the left side of his scalp. A smashed gin bottle was recovered by police.

“The victim was taken to Monklands Hospital where he was treated for the injuries and glue was used to repair the wounds to his face, lip and cheek and medics told him he was likely to have permanent scars to his face and lip.

“At 1.20am, police attended at Rankin’s home address where they had to force entry. He was arrested and taken to Coatbridge police station.”

Rankin’s defence lawyer said she would reserve her comments until her client’s next appearance in court.

Sheriff Morag Shankland told Rankin: “You must appreciate how serious these matters are and all options will be open to me when you return for sentence.

“Bail will be continued at this stage.”

Sentence was deferred on Rankin, of Cedar Lane, until February 25 to obtain a full social background report.
