Airdrie teen flag-bearer during opening ceremony of Solheim Cup golf tournament

An Airdrie teenager acted as a flag-bearer during the opening ceremony of the Solheim Cup – and got to meet with the First Minister.

Frida Skinner, 13, who is part of Action for Children’s North Lanarkshire young carers’ project, had her cap autographed by Nicola Sturgeon ahead of the launch of the golfing spectacular, which saw Europe dramatically defeat USA 14½-13½.

Action for Children is the national charity partner of the Solheim Cup and Frida was one of three flag-bearers put forward for the event.

The excited youngster commented: “It was exciting but nerve-racking to be a flag-bearer at a tournament watched around the world.

“Although the flag was heavy, it was a great experience.

“It was also great to see the First Minister and she signed my cap before the opening ceremony.”

Paul Carberry, Action for Children director for Scotland, added: “It was great to spend some time with the First Minster and have her hear from the young people we work with about how we support them and their roles as flag-bearers.

“We were very pleased to see Frida take part in the opening ceremony – an event seen around the world.

“I know they were both excited and nervous ahead of the event but enjoyed being part of such a unique experience.”
