Airdrie striker Gabby McGill has thrown down the gauntlet to their League One play-off rivals, and said it’s up to them to catch the Diamonds.
McGill netted a double in a 5-1 win over Clyde at New Douglas Park that put them up to third in the table, ahead of this afternoon’s games elsewhere.
Rhys McCabe’s side have now scored an incredible 18 goals in three games, and McGill says confidence is high.
“It’s up to everybody else to catch us – that’s what we talk about,” he said.
“The manager has said we have six games to go in that last quarter and every single one is like a cup final, and that’s how we’re treating it.
“It’s working really well so far, so we’ll keep it up.”
Justin Devenny fot his first goal for the club, while Adam Frizzell and Callum Smith also got on the score-sheet against shell-shocked Clyde, and McGill says it’s all clicking into place.
He said: “Eighteen goals in three games is brilliant. To be fair, it has been the same all season.
“We get chances and we might not take every single one – and maybe earlier in the season we should have been a bit more clinical – but we’re definitely coming into form at the right time – me, Calum Gallagher and Callum Smith, and even the ones on the bench.
“You see it every day in training, we’re really putting in goals, and 18 in three games is brilliant.”
McGill, 22, took his tally to 13 for the season, an incredible eight of which have come in his last four games, but admits a late miss that would have sealed his hat-trick will haunt him.
But after scoring in one minute and 12 seconds, the Englishman admits he’s content.
He said: “The first one is pretty much what we work on. Smithy has made a great run and I’m not sure if he’s won it, but I know he’s got clattered in the process!
“I ran across the first, got a nice positive first touch that set me up perfectly, and just hit it as hard as I could, on target.
“From that close in the keeper pretty much has no chance.
“I think in the past three games I’ve scored in eight minutes, two minutes, and two again.
“We always talk about coming out for the game flying ,and really putting them to the sword early doors and putting the game to bed.
“We didn’t do that, but we’ve definitely started strong, which is what we talk about and that’s good.”
Next up is a trip to Alloa next weekend, and McGill says they’re looking to stretch their run.
He said: “Teams are tight at the top, so we’ll definitely be looking to win the game and put on a good performance, with some nice football.
“We’re flying just now. The mood in the camp has been brilliant all season, even when we’ve gone through sticky patches, and everybody’s buzzing, which is good.”
