Scott Agnew says Airdrie’s festive fixtures will be key for their promotion push – and it can begin with a positive result against former side Alloa Athletic.
The Diamonds midfielder and assistant manager had two spells at the Wasps earlier in his career and meets his ex-club on Sunday.
Airdrie lost last time out against Barry Ferguson’s Wasps, losing 2-1, but Ian Murray’s men have maintained their place in League One’s promotion play-off spots since.
Last Saturday’s game against Clyde was abandoned in the second half due to fog while their previous match with Queen’s Park had to be postponed because of a Covid outbreak at Airdrie.
Agnew’s side will face Alloa, Queen’s Park and Dumbarton over the Christmas period as a busy schedule kicks into gear.
The assistant boss said: “I played for Alloa early in my career so I know what they are all about. I know a lot of the staff and I know some of the players as well, as I’ve played against them for years.
“We know it will be difficult. They have threats all over the park and we know that when we play to our potential, we’re more than capable of winning the game.
“That’s what we will be looking to do. It’s going to be a big week for us. We play three games within a week and it’s obviously a busy period for football.
“As footballers, we are used to that, so we can’t over eat and things like that on Christmas. But it’s part of it. We’ll be ready to go.”
Airdrie were 2-1 up against Lanarkshire rivals Clyde on Saturday thanks to two goals from Gabby McGill, before referee Barry Cook called a halt to proceedings.
While the players felt as if they could persevere until the final whistle, Agnew admits the right call was eventually made.
He explained: “The conditions weren’t great and the referee did the right thing by stopping it.
“When you were on the pitch, we could actually see okay. But the assistant referees couldn’t see if people were offside and things like that. But on the park, it was fine.
“The Clyde boys were happy to try and get it finished but the ref’s decision is fair enough.”
Agnew does have concern for teammate McGill after his brace. He picked up a knee injury in scoring his second goal and had to be stretchered off.
Agnew added: “He’s getting a scan sorted. It’s really disappointing but I hope it’s not too serious. I’m gutted for him.”
