Airdrie star leaves Diamonds after release request

Airdrie have announced the exit of left-back Rico Quitongo.

The defender asked to be released from his contract at the League One club and they have accepted his request.

Quitongo joined the club from Dumbarton and has made 16 appearances for the Diamonds this term.

He was previously a youth academy prospect at Championship club Hamilton Accies.

Earlier this season, Airdrie said there would no action after an alleged racist attack on Quitongo that the player says took place earlier this season.

The New Broomfield club say after conducting a 'thorough investigation' there was insufficient evidence to take further action.

Quitongo then sought legal advice through PFA Scotland after Airdrie dropped their probe into the alleged abuse.

A statement reads: "Defender Rico Quitongo has submitted a request to be released from his contract and the club have duly agreed to this.

"We wish Rico all the best for the future and would like to thank him for his effort and performances whilst playing for Airdrieonians."

Quitongo added on social media: "Always stand for what you believe in no matter if your standing alone, time to play my football with a smile on my face."
