Airdrie sisters collect funds for charities at fun-filled Burns night ceilidh

TWO Airdrie charities have received a welcome windfall thanks to the generosity of three devoted sisters.

Kind-heated Airdrie siblings Margaret Elliott (nee Burns), Jacqueline Bell and Marian Burns rallied round their extended family for a special Burns night ceilidh to raise funds for St Andrew’s Hospice and Airdrie’s Maggie’s Centre.

More than 100 members of the Burns’ clan and their friends came together for an evening of traditional fare, toe-tapping tunes and prize raffles in the town’s St Margaret’s Church hall – and raised an amazing four-figure sum in the process.

Margaret told the Airdrie & Coatbridge Advertiser: “The ceilidh was attended by our large extended family and friends who all enjoyed a night of good food and dancing.

“It was a great night and a fantastic sum of £2000 was raised which was split equally between the two charities.

“We have already decided to do it again next year.”

The family would like to thank local businesses Bathroom People, Clydeside Distillery, Grants Distillery, Guidis, Himalayan Restaurant, Lees, Lorna Smyth Nail Technician, Mears Employee Fund, Overton Farm Shop, Pickled Ginger, Susan Reid Beautician, Talking Heads, Tipsy Cow, Tunnocks and all their family and friends who donated raffle prizes.

Margaret added: “We would also like to say a special thanks to John of St Margaret’s hall, caterer Alec Graham, the Eriskay Lilt ceilidh band, Salud, piper Niall Beattie, my brother Gerard for toasting the haggis and Molly, aged seven, for reciting a Burns poem; they were all fantastic.”
