Airdrie sign Scott Agnew and boss Ian Murray extends contract

Scott Agnew has joined Airdrie as player/assistant manager with Diamonds boss Ian Murray also extending his contract.

Agnew joins from League One rivals East Fife and the 33-year-old midfield will combine his playing role with assistant manager duties next season.

Airdrie boss Ian Murray has also committed his future to the club after signing a contract extension as his deal was set to expire this summer.

The 40 year-old manager has signed Agnew at his previous two clubs, Dumbarton and St Mirren, so the pair already share a strong relationship.

After starting his career at Rangers, Agnew has played for a host of Scottish clubs including Hamilton Academical, Alloa Athletic, Ayr United and Stranraer but he is excited about his future at the Diamonds.

He told the Airdrie website : "I’m really excited about joining the club. First as a player I hope I can add to what will be a strong squad for next season.

“I was lucky enough to have a few options, but the opportunity to work with Ian again in a player/assistant manager role was too good to turn down.

“I know the club will be looking to go one step further next season, and hopefully I can play a part in achieving that.”

Boss Murray was delighted to extend his stay at the Diamonds and to be reunited with Agnew.

He said: "I’m delighted to be staying on, and I’m delighted to welcome Aggy to Airdrie. It’s the third time I’ve signed him, which shows how much I like him as a player and as a person.

“He brings great experience to the squad, and we also want to develop him in a coaching capacity and we look forward to giving him that platform.”

"We are sure our management team will be working hard over the summer to ensure that the squad is ready for what will be, as always, a very competitive League One campaign."
