Airdrie sign former Aberdeen and Albion Rovers defender Harlain Mbayo

Airdrie have agreed terms to sign former Aberdeen and Albion Rovers defender Harlain Mbayo.

The 22-year-old will join the League 1 club pending international clearance, having spent a year at Truro City in the Southern League Premier South.

Mbayo has also spent time with Aberdeen and was on loan at Albion Rovers in the 2017-18 season.

A former Anderlecht youth, Mbayo has also represented the Democratic Republic of Congo at under-21 level.

Mbayo told the club's website: "I’m really excited to be signing for Airdrie. We have similar goals, in terms of winning matches and aiming for promotion at the end of the season, and it gives me another chance to prove myself in Scotland.

"I think I will fit in well with the squad - I’m comfortable being isolated with opposing strikers, but I think my main qualities are on the ball.

"As much as I enjoy defending, I like to express myself - whether that be splitting midfields with a pass or stepping out with the ball.”

Diamonds director of football Stuart Millar said Mbayo is a player who had been on the radar for a while.

He said: "We tried to get Harlain last summer, he’s a big strong lad who will give us options at the back.

"He has a good pedigree after coming through the youth system at Anderlecht and representing his country at Under 21 level, and he’s familiar with the Scottish game after four years at Aberdeen.”
