Former postie and viral TikTok sensation from Airdrie Nathan Evans has landed the number one spot in the on the Official Big Top 40 music chart.
Nathan Evans’ ‘Wellerman’ is the brand new number one, topping the UK's biggest chart show tonight. Meanwhile, ‘Wellerman’ (220 KID x Billen Ted Remix) has come in at number 3, giving Evans two hits in this week’s Top 3.
The Official Big Top 40 host Will Manning revealed the news on air tonight. Evans’ rendition of the traditional ‘Wellerman’ sea shanty has knocked Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘drivers license’ off the top spot, with ‘Wellerman’ (220 KID x Billen Ted Remix) - a remix of the track, climbing 29 places to number 3.
Evans’ rendition of the traditional ‘Wellerman’ sea shanty first took the world by storm on TikTok.
Speaking to Glasgow Live last week, Nathan revealed that his dreams of performing at TRNMST once live music returns after the pandemic and of collaborating with Lewis Capaldi.
He had been singing sea shanties on TikTok since July 2020, but it was his rendition of The Wellerman in December that went global - sparking a craze that has become a source of collaboration between other TikTokers.
Nathan’s performances even led to “sea shanties” enjoying their biggest-ever popularity in Google’s history.
