Airdrie school shut by water issues

Pupils were sent home from an Airdrie school this afternoon after water issues meant classes had to be ended early.

Caldervale High was forced to close at lunchtime following a problem with its water pump, affecting its toilets and sinks.

Youngsters were sent home for the afternoon when the issue was discovered – but North Lanarkshire Council say the school will reopen tomorrow morning (Tuesday) following repairs and that pupils should attend as usual.

An email to families announcing the closure acknowledged the “inconvenience” and added: “The safety of pupils is our priority and it is essential that all pupils and staff have access to toilets and handwashing facilities.”

Lunches were provided for pupils who receive free school meals to take home following the early closure.

A spokesperson for North Lanarkshire Council told the Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertiser: “Caldervale pupils have been sent home today following an issue with the school’s water pump which manages the flow of water to toilets and handwashing facilities.

“It will be repaired tomorrow and pupils should return as normal on Tuesday.”
