Airdrie school scoops Nurture UK award for developed support of its pupils

An Airdrie school was rewarded for preparing its bright youngsters for the future with a top accolade.

Rochsolloch Primary received a Nurturing Schools Award from Nurture UK in the rewarding culmination of a two-and-a-half year journey.

It involved the school using Nurture UK resources to “audit its current practices before embarking on the journey to develop how it supported its children”.

Nurture is about providing pupils with what they need to “flourish and grow”.

The school focused on six Principles of Nurture: Children’s learning is understood developmentally; the classroom offers a safe base; the importance of nurture for the development of wellbeing; language is a vital means of communication; all behaviour is communication; and the importance of transition in children’s lives.

Rochsolloch Primary was visited by an assessor who gave pupils and staff “wonderful feedback” on their hard work.

High praise was given to the “knowledge and understanding of nurture displayed by our staff and children” and it was noted how proud everyone was to be part of Rochsolloch Primary.

Pupils’ parents also provided “excellent feedback” as they recognised the “positive culture that exists in Rochsolloch to support their children’s learning and development”

Head teacher Mark Wilson told Lanarkshire Live : “I’m really proud of the whole school community in helping us achieve this award.

“Understanding our children and providing them with a nurturing environment is fundamental to helping realise our vision of ‘everyone achieves their potential’.

“We’re continuing our nurturing journey, and this recognition of our efforts is wonderful.”

The school’s parent council added: “Rochsolloch parents are delighted that the school has been recognised as a place where nurture is placed front and centre.

“Children are supported in a safe environment, where wellbeing, communication and learning combine to give them the tools they need to grow.”
