Airdrie's Scott Agnew fought off Covid fatigue to help hold Spiders

Scott Agnew revealed he came through Covid fatigue to help Airdrie take a valuable point off league leaders Queen's Park.

The Diamonds' player/assistant manager was one of a number of stars to test positive for the virus last month and admits he felt shattered during the first half at Firhill before finding a second wind after the break.

Neither side could find a way to goal in the 0-0 stalemate, but the attacking midfielder, who was playing a deeper role in front of the back four on Saturday, reckons it was crucial not to lose the game ahead of tomorrow's clash with his old club Alloa - a match that was re-arranged after the club's initial outbreak.

Aggy said: "I've not trained much. Testing positive wasn't ideal and we've got some injuries at the moment, so I just came in, looking to do a job in front of the back four.

"That's the first game I've played since.

"In the first half I didn't feel great, to be honest, I was really fatigued, but I was fine in the second half, so I think it's something you just have to gradually get out of your system.

"I think it drains you and I think Calum Gallagher will tell you the same.

"It's not just the virus, it's 10 days without training as well.

"It was a difficult game. Queen's Park are obviously a good side, they are leading the table at the moment.

"I thought defensively we were very good and our shape was good.

"It took us about 15-20 minutes to settle into the game and we were up against it a but, but once we settled in we were comfortable defensively but we need to be a bit better going forward.

"It's been very stop-start for us with the cancellation.

"It's a cliché, but every game is tough.

"Look at Alloa on Saturday, they go and beat Falkirk 2-0, so they'll be coming here full of confidence on Tuesday.

"But we'll be the same, we'll be looking to win the game."

The Diamonds came closest to finding a breakthrough when Adam Frizzell sent a shot wide inside the box, after a great flowing move in the first half.

Both sides cancelled each other out, but holding the best team in the league so far in their own back yard will provide much encouragement.

The 34-year-old added: "I think the game needed a goal. If we'd got it, we looked defensively sound so I think we would have won the game.

"Frizz hits the post and he was very unlucky actually. If he's another yard in he probably scores.

"There wasn't a lot wrong. Maybe there was that wee bit of quality missing going forward, but we can handle that.

"It's a decent point going into Tuesday and if we win that game, it makes it a better point."
