Matthew McDonald played an integral role against his former side Motherwell last night as the Airdrie sprung a major shock in the Lanarkshire Derby.
The 19-year-old midfielder was released by the Steelmen during the summer but he has dazzled for the Diamonds in the heart of midfield so far this season.
Airdrie ran out comfortable 2-0 winners on the night against their Premiership opposition through a stunning free-kick from Rhys McCabe and a sensational debut strike from Scott McGill.
He said: “It’s a tremendous result for Airdrie and to give the fans that result is amazing.
"It felt good to come up against my old side and to do the right things.
“We were more than confident that we could pick up a result tonight and the hunger and desire in this squad is second to none.
"We don’t fear anyone as we’ve got quality within our squad and you could see that tonight as we scored two fantastic goals.”
The phenomenal result has given Ian Murray’s side a good shot at getting out of the group and should they win against Queen of The South on Saturday, the Diamonds would run out group winners.
McDonald continued: “We are focused on Saturday and we’re ready to go. The morale within the squad is high after tonight’s result.
“The team's buzzing, I’m happy with my performance and we’re ready to go Saturday.”
