Airdrie's defeat to Cove Rangers made worse by results elsewhere, admits Callum Fordyce

Callum Fordyce admits Airdrie's late defeat to Cove Rangers was made all the more painful when he looked at results elsewhere on Saturday night.

The Diamonds were top of League One going into the clash and were looking to extend their lead at the summit, only for Cove to notch two late goals and leapfrog them to go two points clear.

But with rivals Queen's Park and Falkirk both losing to Peterhead and Montrose respectively, Fordyce felt it was a big opportunity missed when he clocked the scorelines as a win could have put the Diamonds in a great position.

The Airdrie captain admitted: "It's the first thing you check after the games, the other results.

"So we look at this as a chance missed but, at the same time, there is only two points between us and Cove at the top and other teams didn't really gain on us with the results elsewhere.

"We knew if we'd won we would have put a bit of daylight between us and everybody else, but that's how tight this league is.

"It's disappointing. But anyone can beat anyone, there's not a bad team in the league."

Airdrie had been on a great run, winning five of their previous six games, but supporters still voiced their displeasure at full time.

Fordyce added: "You expect the fans not to be happy and the players aren't happy either.

"Nobody likes getting beat, so they are rightly frustrated because I don't think we turned up and played how we've been playing recently.

"That's the most frustrating thing for us as players.

"That competitiveness, that willingness to go the extra yard, we didn't quite have that."
