Craig Watson admits it was a missed opportunity for Airdrie to go top of League One last weekend, but says they can get back on track when Peterhead come calling.
The 26-year-old defender knows Saturday’s New Broomfield clash won’t be easy, but says Airdrie have enough in their dressing room to get their title challenge back on track, following their 2-1 defeat at Alloa last weekend.
With leaders Queen’s Park drawing 3-3 at second-placed Cove Rangers, a win for Ian Murray’s men would have put them top of the pile, and Watson admits that was frustrating.
“It was disappointing,” he said. “It’s always disappointing to lose, but the performance more so than anything, both personally and collectively as a team – we all know we can do better.
“With Cove and Queen’s drawing, we could have been top, so you can look at it both ways – you can also look at it that they’re just one point ahead now, not one team has pulled away, so it’s still all to play for.
“We have confidence in our individual and team performances that we can hopefully get the results needed.”
Watson missed the 3-2 win up at the Balmoor Stadium back in August, but says Jim McInally’s side gave a good account of themselves.
He added: “Peterhead are on a good run of form, they’re a solid team, and I was one of the players who was missing at the game up there because of the Covid situation, but from what I watched on the live stream and the feedback from all the lads that were playing, it was a tough game.
“In my experience of playing against them, it always has been.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re playing a team nearer the bottom of the league or one of the so-called favourites at the top, it’s just as important to get the wins in both.”
Watson admits it took Airdrie a few weeks go get to know each other some big changes in the summer, but says they could be on the cusp of something special.
He said: “It took a few weeks in pre-season and the early games to knit together, to understand how we play with each other.
“But the team spirit is fantastic, it’s a really good bunch of players and the work-ethic both in training and outwith football is excellent.
“I’d love to see the team achieve something this season, and there’s no reason why we can’t, if we get back to form.”
