Airdrie resident rescues eagle-owl perched on their doorstep

LIFE was a hoot for an Airdrie resident after they found an unusual visitor perched on their doorstep.

The non-native eagle-owl, named Grimm, was among the most unusual rescues reported by the Scottish SPCA last year.

Rescue officer Kirsty Baird was called out to attend to the bird after he was found by a member of the public, who was concerned for his welfare but intimated due to his size.

Kirsty explained: “I thought this was unusual as our native tawny or barn owls are small and not very threatening; and not something you see often in Airdrie.”

The owl, which had been moved to a large shed at the back of the garden, was a surprising find for the charity’s rescue officer as the birds are not native to Scotland.

Kirsty said: “The rare bird was quite weak and disorientated and relatively easy to catch for such a big bird.

“After care and recuperation, he went to live with a falconer where he gets plenty of stimulation and exercise."

And Monklands' bird lovers can now follow Grimm’s tale on Instagram at grimmtheeagleowl.
