Airdrie photographer winner of Hospice charity calendar competition

Airdrie photographer Kerri Beck was the overall winner of a charity calendar competition run by St Andrew’s Hospice and New College Lanarkshire.

Students on the college’s photography courses were invited to submit images on the theme of “family” – with the top 12 being chosen to feature in the hospice’s fundraising calendar for 2020.

Kerri’s striking image, entitled Family Ties, was selected as the best from among more than 160 entries by a judging panel led by renowned landscape photographer Colin Prior.

She said: “I wanted to showcase what family meant to me.

“I took three trainers, each from a member in my family, and used the laces to spell out the word – with roots under the shoes to symbolise the family roots that tie us all together and keep us connected.”

Kerri, who is studying for an NQ in photography at the college’s Coatbridge campus, will see her photograph featured on the August page of the St Andrew’s calendar.

Fellow students Jules Greegain and Margaret Anne McKenna each had two images selected for inclusion, with photographs by Heather Callaghan, Lauren Foster, Caitlin Johnstone, Craig Murray, Emma Sims, Hannah Ward and Willie Wood also being chosen.

The winning entries were revealed at an awards ceremony at the college’s Motherwell campus, which also saw head judge Colin share insights from his career.

Photography students assist the hospice by taking images at their events, and last year’s inaugural calendar featuring their images sold 1000 copies to raise vital funds for the Airdrie charity.

Hospice community development co-ordinator Andrew Flynn said: “After the success of the 2019 calendar, we’re delighted to be working with New College Lanarkshire once again on such an excellent project.

“The talent on display is incredible and it was a very difficult task picking only 12 pictures.

“The partnership between the hospice and the college is fantastic, as we have students and staff willing to use their talents to help support our patients and their families.

“As well as needing to raise £88,000 every week, it’s about letting people know that St Andrew’s Hospice is there to support them when they need it; this calendar will do both and we are very proud and thankful to be working with the college.”

The fundraising calendar featuring the students’ winning photographs costs £5 and will go on sale in October.
