Airdrie murder cops probing burnt out Astra after man abducted and dumped by side of road

Police probing the abduction and murder of a man in Airdrie have found a burnt out car.

Colin MacDonald, 59, was found dumped seriously injured four miles away from his home.

Officers were initially called to a disturbance in the town's Frew Street just after 12.30am on Monday, with Colin later found on Rankin Crescent in Greengairs.

It's believed he was forced into a car, before being dumped by the side of the road with serious injuries. He later died in Monklands Hospital.

A murder inquiry was launched and officers are investigating whether a burnt out Vauxhall Astra, which was found on Forrest Road between Caldercruix and Kirk of Shotts is connected to the murder.

They are keen to speak to anyone who saw the burned out vehicle or has any information on how it got there.

They also want to speak to anyone who saw a small, dark coloured car on either Frew Street or Rankin Crescent.

Detective Chief Inspector Alan Sommerville, from the Major Investigation Team, said: "A burnt out Vauxhall Astra was recovered by police on Forrest Road between Caldercruix and Kirk of Shotts around 4.30pm on Monday, August 19,2019.

"It's still to be established if the car is linked to this investigation but if anyone drove past the burnt out car in that area and saw anyone there or has any relevant information, please contact us.

"No matter how insignificant it may seem, let us decide if it is relevant or not."

He added: "I would reiterate my appeal for anyone who was in the area of Frew Street, Airdrie and Rankin Crescent, Greengairs between midnight and 1.30am on Monday morning to speak to us if they have any information that may assist the inquiry.

"From our inquiries so far we know a small dark coloured car was seen at both locations."

DCI Sommerville also says the attack on Colin was targeted.

He said: "We believe this is a targeted attack. It would appear the 59-year-old man was the intended victim but the motive is still unknown."

Anyone with information should contact police via 101 quoting incident number 0074 of Monday, August 19.
