Airdrie MSP's unusual first task after election victory

Neil Gray's first task as an MSP proved to be a matter of local importance close to home, much to the entertainment of his social media followers.

The newly-returned Airdrie & Shotts representative shared a tweet from his proud wife congratulating him on his election win - and asking him to stop on the way home from the election declaration at Ravenscraig to "pick up milk".

He duly delivered an hour later, posting a picture on social media showing himself arriving home - where his front door was decorated with congratulations posters made by his four young children - bearing two large cartons.

The exchange rapidly gained 4500 likes on the social media site, with numerous respondents also jokingly sending their own shopping lists in reply.

With Mr Gray proving to be a busy man following the 4.25pm declaration at the North Lanarkshire count centre at Ravenscraig, proud wife Karlie messaged on Twitter to say: "We couldn't be more delighted for you as a family.

"However, I can't get you on message or phone so if you could pick up milk on the way home, I'd appreciate it" - adding the hashtag "back down to earth with a bang".

The resulting pictures were even swiftly made into a cartoon and print shared on Twitter by Glasgow illustrator @OorPatts, depicting Mr Gray with his two cartons of milk and the MSP's own verdict on the matter: "Telt!"

Among those replying to the light-hearted election-day update was SNP depute leader Keith Brown, who tweeted his party colleague to say: "Couldn't be more delighted, Neil. BTW, when you come through to Parliament next week could you pick up..."

Mr Gray - who is moving to the Scottish Parliament after standing down from the equivalent Airdrie seat at Westminster to contest the Holyrood election - replied: "Half of Scotland ready for me to get the messages, it feels!"
