Airdrie man put under supervision for drunken tirade towards his partner

A MAN who launched a tirade of abuse at his partner after returning home drunk has been put on a community payback order.

Gerard Martin, 49, of Westermavisbank Avenue in Airdrie, behaved in a threatening or abusive manner likely to cause a reasonable person to suffer fear or alarm.

Martin shouted, swore and acted in an aggressive manner towards his partner on December 29 last year.

Prosecutor Alice Carey told Airdrie Sheriff Court that at the time of the offence Martin was on bail, an order imposed on him at the same court last September.

Ms Carey went on: “They [Martin and his partner] had been in a relationship for 20 years.

“He returned home that evening having consumed alcohol while watching football.

“An argument ensued and police were called.

“When they arrived, they found him heavily intoxicated.

“Police heard him shouting at her, ‘ya f****** money-grabbing c**. Ya boot’.”

Martin offered no reply when he was cautioned and charged.

Defence lawyer Paul Belardo said: “Last year was a very stressful time.

“To deal with it, he began drinking heavily; drink has been a factor in his life.”

Sheriff Petra Collins put Martin on a community payback order with nine months of supervision.

The sheriff told him it was as a direct alternative to a fine.
