Airdrie library ready to welcome back readers

Airdrie library is reopening this Monday, September 7.

The library on Wellwynd in the town centre will become North Lanarkshire’s third to welcome back readers, following nearby Coatbridge plus Cumbernauld which opened at the start of this week.

It will be open from 10am to 4pm on weekdays, and readers will see changes such as limited numbers of visitors, social distancing, hand sanitising and the mandatory wearing of face coverings.

Returned items will be quarantined for three days before going back on the shelves, and customers are asked to “browse with your eyes and not your hands in order to avoid coming into physical contact with too many items”.

As is the case at Coatbridge, community activities such as children’s book sessions at Airdrie library are suspended with operators Culture NL saying: Officials say: “Due to Covid restrictions on social gatherings, no group activities will take place for the foreseeable future.”

The library’s toilets will also remain closed, while computer sessions are limited to 30 minutes’ duration, and tables and chairs have been removed to create additional space being as they choose books.

Culture NL say of its other 16 libraries including Chapelhall, Chryston and Moodiesburn: “Further reopening dates will be announced in due course – we are opening our libraries on a phased basis to ensure they are as safe as possible for our customers and staff.”
