Airdrie Ladies expect Ayr replay despite game being snowed off as they prepared to take a penalty

Airdrie Ladies look set to be forced to replay their clash with Ayr – despite holding a 2-1 lead and preparing to take a penalty as the game was axed.

With the Diamonds leading 2-1 after 70 minutes the referee abandoned the game as snow began to lie at the Penny Cars Stadium.

Manager Jim Morton says the league clash was called of because they couldn’t see the penalty spot after the referee awarded a foul.

Despite the chance of leading 3-1 with the clock ticking down, Morton says the club now expect to have to start the 90 minutes again.

He told Lanarkshire Live Sport: “We still don’t know if they will be replaying the game, but we expect it now.

“We haven’t heard from the SWF but we have put in our request for the game for next Wednesday.

“It’s frustrating because you look at it and think you could be 3-1 up and we would have kept our unbeaten run going.

“It’s swings and roundabouts; we believe we can keep our good run going.”

The Diamonds cruised into the quarter-final of the Champions Cup last weekend with a comfortable 6-2 win over Westdyke.

Lousie Davidson’s hat-trick and goals from Megan Murray, Jen Marshall and Lauren Stephen ensured the victory.

Stacey McCallum also saved a penalty when the game was poised at 1-0.

Gaffer Morton added: “We have real strength in depth now. The squad is pushing each other and we have individual battles for places; that’s showing.”
