Airdrie house destroyed by 'explosion' too dangerous for emergency services to enter

A house destroyed by an unexplained 'explosion' is too dangerous for emergency services to enter to find out if anyone was inside.

Emergency services have been unable to ascertain whether anyone was inside the property on Ewart Street in Airdrie at the time of the fire.

Firefighters, police and paramedics were called to the scene around 3am on Saturday, June 27 after locals reported hearing an explosion.

Teams remained property for several hours but are still unable to say whether anyone was inside due to condition of the building.

The occupants of eight nearby properties were evacuated following the blaze.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Around 3.05am on June 27, police and emergency services were called to a report of a fire within a detached house in Ewart Drive, Airdrie.

"The occupants of eight nearby houses were evacuated at the time as a precaution, however, four have since been allowed to return. The others remain with family and friends."
