Airdrie hope to be back in action by October

Airdrie are in the dark about when they will return to league action, but director of football Stuart Millar says he will be disappointed if it isn’t October.

That depends on league reconstruction, which could see Airdrie fired up to the Championship should clubs come to an agreement. Before the coronavirus crisis struck, the Diamonds were very much in the League 1 play-off hunt.

Reports have suggested that the Championship will get back in action o October 17, playing each other three times, in a 27-game season.

Millar says anything that is being spoken about with regards to a return to action is rumour so far, but says original projections probably aren’t far off the mark.

He explained: “We’ve heard absolutely nothing. The Premiership are intending to start back in August to fulfil the Sky contract, the general opinion of thought was that the Championship would start back in September, and maybe League 1 or League 2 clubs would start back in October, but I can assure you there is nothing concrete, no dates have been put down.

“I’ve also heard that the Betfred Cup might start in September, but nothing has been discussed at all, regarding anything like that.

“We’ve had no indication, we don’t even know what league we’re going to be in, or when we’re going to start back, so everything is up in the air just now until we get some proper confirmation.

“It’s difficult to say when I think we’ll be back; it depends on what league we’ll be in and that’s up in the air just now, so I’m only speculating.

"I don’t think they’ll be far away from their thought process and their intentions.

“I don’t think you can have the Premiership back in the August and then have the rest of the divisions three or four months later – that doesn’t make sense. They have to sort out testing, is it going to be behind closed doors? All these sorts of things.

“I would be very disappointed if we weren’t back playing by October. We will do what’s right and do the proper thing, and take advice from the people who know what they’re talking about.”
