Airdrie gaffer's half-time blast helps Diamonds sparkle in second half

Ian Murray revealed a half-time blast helped fire his Diamonds to victory on the opening day.

The Airdrie gaffer admits his side weren't at their best as a goal in each half, courtesy of a Dale Carrick penalty and a Callum Fordyce header, got their League One campaign off to a flier at home to Peterhead.

But Murray watched his men struggle early on before coming into the match as the half-time interval approached.

And he said: "The first 40 minutes, Peterhead were on top of us.

"They were pushing the game and we were trying to be the ones squeezing up and trying to get in behind them to see how leggy they were from their two cup matches, but it looked the opposite.

"So at half-time we had a few words with them and we came out second half all guns blazing.

"We looked really fit, really strong as the game went on - as you would expect from them because we have been working really hard - and we got goals at good times, from two set-plays.

"It's the opening game and the most important thing is the victory and we managed to do that.

"I wouldn't say we were at our finest, especially in the first 45 minutes, but the penalty calmed us down going into half time.

"In the second half, we've limited them to very little.

"I can't remember Max [Currie] having a save to make, but we've not worked their goalkeeper enough.

"Once we start clicking, we are a real handful."

It was Airdrie's first league match for seven months and Murray hailed the efforts of all involved for getting the Diamonds back to business.

He added: "Everyone has worked incredibly hard to get us back on the pitch; people behind the front desk, the board of directors, the chairman, so we are very grateful that we are back.

"This is the most important thing and we've capped it off with a good win at home on the opening day."
