Airdrie fan to face fears and travel for first time in 20 years for charity trip

Grahame Marshall will face his fears as he leaves the country with his community trust pals for the first time in more than two decades.

The Airdrie native has not left Scotland since 1995 due to ongoing mental health battles, but he was delighted to be a part of the Mongolia charity trip.

The 57-year-old says that the Trust’s get-fit Football Fans In Training scheme has really helped to build up his confidence.

And he praised organiser Dougy Allsop and Honorary Consul for Mongolia in Scotland David Scott for helping him brave the trip across the East Asia.

The Diamonds fan told the Advertiser: “A few years ago, I couldn’t have even imagined doing something like this. The guys within the group have given me such great support that I felt like I could finally do it.

“I met Dougy and we had the Football Fans In Training stuff.

“I really liked the Trust guys and what they were about, and I have met a good group.

“I know that it will be hard for me, but with Dougy and the guys supporting me I really think I can go over there and help. It’s not something you get the chance to do every day and Dougy gave me the push to do it.

“The way the Trust have helped me really pushed me to want to do something with them like this.

“I’m ready to go. I don’t really know what it will be like, but I’m sure over there I will have great support.”
