Airdrie drink-driver banned from the road for a year

AN Airdrie van driver found to be more than four times over the limit has been fined £400 and banned from driving for a year.

Alan Greenaway admitted a charge of being in charge of a motor vehicle in Dunblane on September 9 while the proportion of alcohol in his breath was 91mg in 100ml of breath. The limit is 22mg.

Stirling Sheriff Court heard last week that Greenaway had been spotted under the influence by a passer-by and police alerted.

Greenaway’s agent Alastair Ross said the 57-year-old suffered from depression and had not been coping with difficulties in his personal life.

Mr Ross recognised that Greenaway, a self-employed plasterer, would lose his driving licence, but was fortunately still able to work.

Sheriff William Gilchrist told Greenaway that he had been “well above” the prescribed limit and a driving disqualification was “inevitable in the circumstances”.

He fined Greenaway £400, reduced from £600 due to his plea, with three months to pay, and imposed a community payback order with 12 months’ supervision to help him address his alcohol use.

Greenaway was also disqualified from driving for 12 months.
