Airdrie director speaks out as he reveals Harry Redknapp contact

Airdrieonians have revealed they held discussion with former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp to develop players.

The 73-year has confirmed he spoke to the Diamonds’ co-owner Paul Hetherington and on Sunday the club’s director of football, Stuart Millar, told fans they have explored the possibility of working with Redknapp to bring on players in Monklands and sell them to bigger clubs.

Diamonds fans were left stunned on Friday when it emerged Redknapp, who has previously stated his desire to become involved ‘behind the scenes at a small club’, could be heading to North Lanarkshire.

Reports suggested Redknapp could be involved in a takeover, but that has been dismissed by both parties.

In a statement released to the Club 1924 supporters’ group, Millar said: “As you know, Airdrieonians hit the headlines during the week in the national newspapers.

“The article about Harry Redknapp was front page and back page news, so therefore I would like to update you on the background behind it.

“We can confirm the club have been in dialogue with Harry Redknapp and his representatives.

“It was a very relaxed and informal way of exploring the possibility of working together, with a view to developing both Scottish and European players at Airdrieonians and then selling them on to larger clubs.

“We have other connections we are working on along similar lines.

“The approach was always going to form part of our development plans moving forward.”

Redknapp has been out of the game since 2017 when he was sacked by Birmingham City.

But he returned to the public eye in Decmber 2018 when he was crowned King of the Jungle on the reality TV show, ‘I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here'.

Addressing the talks with Airdrie, Redknapp said: “I do like the idea of an involvement again from the football side of things – but I certainly won’t be putting money into a club.

“It’s true that I spoke with the Airdrie chairman and he seemed a decent fella. I was also impressed with what he had to say.

“But I’m certainly not trying to buy Airdrie. I appreciated their interest.”
