Airdrie defender sets his sights on League One title after Hamilton Accies switch

Defender Leon McCann is setting his sights on the Championship after agreeing a permanent

The left-back’s loan deal from Hamilton Accies ran out following the win over Forfar but has agreed an 18-month contract at the Diamonds.

He reckons the hard-fought win over the Loons thanks to substitute Nat Wedderburn’s second half strike.

“In the second half I thought we came into it and throughout the full second half we looked as if we were going to score more.

“These are the games you have to win if you are going to win the championship. We know that these are the types of games that if you want to win the championship you have to go and win.

“Forfar are fighting for something lower down the league. They have something to prove so they aren’t going to just come here and think it’s just another game.

“They are here for three points and so are we, but games like this is where champions are made.

“If we keep winning games like this then we have a great chance.”

The 19-year-old praised and hoped to repay that support with the League One title.

“From the second I came here everyone made me feel welcome. The players, the staff and the fans.

“Playing every single week was a big attraction for me so hopefully I can keep doing that.

“For my first season in professional football to be going to the championship is definitely a good thing. I want to be playing in the Championship next year.”

Darren Whyte came close for the visitors after 32 minutes as his header was cleared off the line by McCann.

A Kyle MacDonald corner found an unmarked Callum Smith just after half-time however the Airdrie winger man headed well over the bar.

A neat one-two between Smith and substitute Wedderburn saw the towering midfielder unleash a low drive but goalkeeper Marc McCallum smothered the ball in 66 minutes.

Wedderburn managed to get on the end of Sean Crighton’s knockdown to volley the ball in after 73 minutes.
