A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of Scots gran Catherine Stewart.

Colin Kennedy made no plea when he appeared in private at Airdrie Sheriff Court on Monday.

Officers were called to the property on Sunday morning (Stuart Vance)

The 60-year-old faces a single count of murder after the body of a 54-year-old woman was found at a property in Torrance Avenue on Sunday, July 4.

Police were called to the house following reports of a ‘serious assault’ but Catherine was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

She was formally identified by officers on Monday while her family have asked to be left alone to grieve in private.

Detective Inspector Gordon Sneddon said: "Our thoughts are very much with Catherine's family at this time.

“They have asked for their privacy to be respected, as they come to terms with their tragic loss."

Kennedy was remanded in custody and has had his cases committed for further examination.

He is due to reappear at court within the next eight days.
