Airdrie couple "still in a dream" together as they celebrate 60 years married

An Airdrie woman says she feels like she’s still “in a dream” as she and her husband mark their diamond anniversary.

Gertrude and Jim McLeod dined with family at Strathclyde Park’s Alona Hotel last month to raise a glass to their 60 years as a married couple.

Gertrude, 80 and Jim, 85, tied the knot at the town’s West Parish Church on July 17, 1959.

They met four years previously at a dance in Airdrie town hall.

Reflecting on their courtship, Gertrude said: “He was such a handsome man and I knew he was the one for me. Every time he asked me to go out it was a yes.

“Our wedding day was very special; it was a beautiful service and the whole thing was lovely.

“I had a lot of relatives there and they all went to the hall after it for the reception. It was a fabulous day and I’ll never forget it.

“I’m still in a dream, even 60 years later.”

Jim worked for Patersons Quarries in Greenoakhill for more than 40 years, while Gertrude worked several jobs while caring for the couple’s three children – Fiona, Brian and Rod.

On top of that, she also ran her own clothing boutique, Cinderfella, in Coatbridge for a few years.

Both were keen bowlers and members of the Glenmavis club for many years.

Jim also enjoyed fishing and shooting, but both now love cooking and “pottering around the garden”.

Following their fantastic celebratory meal at the Alona last month, Gertrude said: “The afternoon at the Alona was lovely. We had a good day with family and did a bit of dancing back at the house afterwards!”

She added: “Marriage is all about give and take.

“Every couple has ups and downs; but we always talked about things and found a solution to any problem.

“We always knew it would work out and never went to sleep on a row. Jim always looks on the bright side of things, especially if I can’t see it.

“He has a great nature and I’ve learned a lot from him. He’s a very dedicated family man. I feel very blessed and have to pinch myself at the life Jim and I have shared.”
