Airdrie chief calls for league reconstruction during coronavirus SPFL shut down

Airdrie director of football Stuart Millar has urged Scottish football's top brass to consider league reconstruction during the SPFL season shut down.

The League One side had been chasing the title before the season was brought to a halt amid concerns over the coronavirus outbreak and current sit third in the table.

With promotion and relegation current up in the air with the current season suspended, Millar hopes the governing bodies will take this chance to extend the leagues.

He also believes all teams currently in promotion spot should be sent up with no relegation from any league.

"In my opinion this is an ideal time for league reconstruction," Millar told Lanarkshire Live Sport.

"No relegation; promote the top four teams in Championship, League One and League Two.

"Promote the top two in Lowland League and Highland League to League Two.

"This system would give the Premiership a Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Highland, Dundee and Ayrshire derby next season surely a huge attraction for the TV companies as well as the loyal fans."

Millar says the club have shut down training at least until next week.

The DoF added: "In line with most other clubs are in lock down until the beginning of next week.

"We await guidance from the governing bodies including the SFA and SPFL in accordance with the joint response group."
