Airdrie boss Ian Murray welcomes selection headache as goalkeepers impress at Kelty Hearts

Ian Murray admits he has his work cut out to pick a first choice goalkeeper after both David Hutton and Max Currie produced strong showings against Kelty Hearts.

The Diamonds were held to a 1-1 draw by Barry Ferguson's side in Fife, as Kallum Higginbotham cancelled out Ally Roy's second half opener for the visitors.

Airdrie's keepers got 45 minutes each with Hutton keeping a clean sheet in the first half and Currie - a summer signing from Stranraer - made a great double stop late on after saving a penalty from Nathan Austin.

Murray said: "You want two goalkeepers pushing each other all the way, and that's what we've got - but it's the same all over the pitch if I'm being truthful.

"We've got a lot of quality in the wide areas now as well, so it's very difficult to pick a team.

"David and Max have trained really well and pushed each other all the way and I'm looking for that to continue throughout the season."

Neither side could find a breakthrough before the break, with a fingertip save from Hutton denying Kelty's Dylan Easton and David Jamieson making some smart stops down the other end to frustrate Craig Thomson and Paul McKay.

However, the visitors got off the mark just a minute into the second half when Thomas Robert's fine run set up Roy and his deflected effort found the back of the net.

In 57 minutes Kelty were awarded a penalty when Easton went down in the box under pressure from Sabatini.

The usually reliable Nathan Austin was denied by Currie from the spot, but Higginbotham followed up to bury the rebound.

Currie made a fine double save to keep it all square and the Diamonds almost won it at the death when Robert's free-kick was superbly turned away by Jamieson.

And Murray was pleased with the overall performance from his League One outfit on their first pre-season outing.

He added: "It's not just our first game back from pre-season, it's the first game back for six months, so we are very happy.

"It was a decent work out against a decent side and it was all about fitness today, and most importantly there's no injuries.

"It's been difficult trying to bed all these guys in with all the uncertainty of what's going on.

"To get them out on the pitch has been great.

"Thomas Robert came on and Griffin Sabatini got 90 minutes under his belt.

"Max Currie and Dean Ritchie also got 45.

"Plenty of new faces got a run out, so the building blocks are in place for the start of the new season."
