Airdrie boss Ian Murray: We must sharpen up in final third, despite late goal flurry

Airdrieonians boss Ian Murray is looking for more from his Diamonds in front of goal after it took two stoppage time strikes to see off Cumbernauld Colts in the NL Cup semi-final.

It looked like the Lowland League side were going to hold the League One title hopefuls to a goalless draw over 90 minutes at Broadwood.

But a stunning overhead kick from new boy Jordan Allan and a close range finish from Calum Gallagher booked their place in tomorrow's final of the pre-season tournament.

While Murray was content with his side's overall display, he is demanding more from his side up top as they build towards competitive action starting next week at home to Annan in the Premier Sports League Cup.

Murray said: "It was a hard pre-season game.

"A lot of credit goes to Cumbernauld Colts, they made it a really competitive game.

"We scored late, but I think our pressure told in the end. Overall it was a tough one for us.

"I was much happier with the first half, than I was the first, in terms of how we moved the ball.

"The rain coming on to the pitch helped us a little bit. I would still have been happy if it finished 0-0, with the way we passed the ball about.

"But we do need to sharpen up in the final third - and we know that.

"We need to have better quality in there, but in terms of our actual fundamentals in the game, they were quite good.

"We don't have a lot of time to drill things into players so they've picked it up fairly quickly.

"The ideas in the players' heads and what they are trying to do looks good."

Airdrie will face either Clyde or Albion Rovers in the NL Cup final tomorrow, with both sides in action in the other semi-final, kicking off at 3pm.

Murray added: "The later start [3pm instead of 12pm for their game tomorrow] helps for recovery.

"It might not sound like a lot to people, but for us it's important.

"And it's a final. It's a chance for players to impress and we'll see who it is - Clyde or Albion Rovers will be a wee derby for us anyway, so we'll need to be up for it.

"We'll need to play better than we did today."

The Diamonds had three trialists on show and Murray wasn't giving anything away on their identities or if he's likely to offer any of them a deal.

He said: "It will depend on over the weekend. We'll have a think about it after tomorrow.

"The biggest thing is coming through this weekend and seeing what we need in terms of cover."
