Airdrie boss Ian Murray opens up on a difficult year without fans

Airdrie boss Ian Murray admits a year without fans has been difficult, and the stop-start nature of this season has also been frustrating.

Fans were last able to flock to New Broomfield on March 7, 2020, when a Dale Carrick strike gave Airdrie a 1-0 win over 10-man East Fife.

Ten games into their League One campaign, the Diamonds put players and staff on furlough when lower league football was suspended on January 12, and that has only just been lifted, with Airdrie travelling to Peterhead for a crunch League One game on Saturday.

Murray says all of the clubs in the tiers below the Championship deserve enormous credit for how they have handled the situation.

He said: "It feels great though of course we've only got two fixtures in there, but it's nice to get back first and foremost to training, and we know the plans now for the next two weeks.

"We're all really happy and it's nice to finally get back again.

"As you can imagine it has been crazy for everybody in general, but in our line of work it has been a bit more crazy.

"We've been back, we've not been back, there has been a lot of discussion about it, and it has been difficult with no fans in the ground and certain protocols to follow.

"Everybody has just tried to get on with it as best we can, but there is no doubt that it has not been the same.

"I think the players, management and staff of all the clubs have adapted really well."

Murray added: "We've been on furlough, it has been tough, but those are the rules and that's what we've had to do, but it was frustrating.

"It's frustrating for anybody when they're not working, and especially when they're fit and able to work, so it was very hard, but we also understand it is the rules."
