Airdrie boss Ian Murray left frustrated by inconsistencies as they fall to defeat

Ian Murray says Airdrie are battling inconsistency after falling to defeat at East Fife, but says they’re still in a good position in League One.

The struggling Fifers bagged a goal in each half through Jack Hamilton to take the points, but Murray points out that a win at home to Montrose on Saturday could fire them from fourth to second in the table.

Murray says that wouldn’t suddenly mean everything was fine, but it’s not all doom and gloom either.

“I’m very disappointed with the result. It’s a disappointing performance and it’s a blow to us, there’s no question about that, but that’s all it is.

“It wasn’t for the want of trying – the effort and commitment were there from the players, but we just fell short quality-wise.

“You can look on it in many ways – you can say it’s one defeat in four league games, or we haven’t won for two weeks, whatever way you want to spin it – but ultimately it’s so frustrating.

“It’s frustrating for the supporters, for the players, because they want to try and be good every single week and as managers and players we always think we could do better.”

Murray added: “The league table tells the story; Falkirk are ahead at the moment but everybody else is kind of the same.

“We’re one win away from second place, we have to remember that. It’s very easy to get wrapped up in a poor result, but that’s what it is.

“If we win against Montrose and results go for us we’re second, and if that happens it doesn’t mean we’re sitting back thinking everything’s rosy – not at all – but likewise, when we lose it’s not always as bad as it seems.

“There is no doubt that the game on Saturday has knocked us, and it has given teams around us a huge boost, but the beauty of a tight league is that your next game gives you a chance to get to where you want to get to.

“All the games are big and important, and can propel you up.

“I won’t be the only manager in the league who is crying about how inconsistent we are, so I’m sure we all have that little conundrum at the moment, apart from Falkirk.”

Murray says Airdrie are still missing Patrick Pyott and Harlain Mbayo for the visit of Montrose, but striker Calum Gallagher is nearing full fitness, having come off the bench at the Locality Hub Bayview Stadium.
