Airdrie boss Ian Murray: Frizzell winner worthy of gracing top flight football

Airdrie boss Ian Murray reckons Adam Frizzell's stunning strike to beat Alloa was worthy of winning any game - and insisted folk would be raving about it if it had been scored in a higher division.

The winger struck what proved to be the winner in 50 minutes, stroking the ball home with the outside of his boot to find the top corner after Calum Gallagher's early strike had given the Diamonds a 12th minute lead.

Alloa pulled one back through substitute Connor Sammon just after the hour mark, but Murray's men held out to leapfrog Barry Ferguson's side in the table and climb to sixth.

And Murray was full of praise for Frizzell's fine finish.

He enthused: "It was outstanding. If that goal was in a higher league we’d be waxing lyrical about it.

"It’s an incredible finish from a very good football player.

“I know how good Adam is and he deserved that.

“Outside of his boot, the goalkeeper has got no chance.

“It was a real moment of quality that probably gets lost because it’s in League One but that is a goal to win any match."

There was real quality in Airdrie's opener with Craig Watson producing an outstanding delivery, whipping the ball in from the right perfectly for Gallagher to head on target, and then mop up the rebound.

Murray added: "It was a great team goal and it was something we've maybe lacked a little bit in the opening weeks in wide areas, so I've been dying to get Craig out there.

"Gal's had a really hard time. His form has been below what he showed last season and he's been hit by Covid, but how many times has he popped up when we need him?

"His initial header was decent and it's a good save from David Hutton, but Gal has followed it in and it gave us a great start to the match.

“The work ethic in the team is just remarkable. We all get on really well together and I couldn’t be more proud of the players.”
