Airdrie boss Ian Murray delivers brutal Betfred Cup campaign verdict after Edinburgh City defeat

Airdrie boss Ian Murray admits they have had a "really poor" Betfred Cup campaign after "erratic" results and defeat to Edinburgh City.

Blair Henderson's early strike was enough to secure the three group points for the visitors at the Penny Cars Stadium last night - and send the Diamonds out of the compeitition.

Despite feeling Airdrie were the better side, Murray didn't hide from the shock defeat to the League Two side and their exit with a game to spare against Premiership Livingston this weekend.

He told Lanarkshire Live Sport : "The result is disappointing, of course it is, but we actually played some decent stuff and pretty much dominated the game.

"That doesn't deflect that it is a poor result ultimately. We know that it's hard when you don't get the first goal in these types of games.

"It's been a very hard Betfred Cup campaign, because it's been split into mini-league over a long period of time. That's the format, it is what it is.

"Not taking anything out of Alloa made it really difficult for us and we lose at home again last night.

Murray says Airdrie can beat Livingston to progress (SNS Group)

"We would prefer a league game this weekend rather than playing Livingston to get back to it, but we get on with it.

"We don't have a massive squad to change things up so a lot of these boys will have to play again on Saturday.

"We look to finish on a positive. We had a good result against Clyde in the league which sets us up well for the games against Forfar and Cove Rangers.

"These are the games we are looking towards at the moment, but it doesn't deflect from a really poor League Cup campaign.

"It's not just last night. Beating Livingston on Saturday would give us a great confidence boost but it wouldn't get away from the fact that results in the cup have been erratic."
