Airdrie boss calls on Diamonds to turn the screw in title race after win over East Fife

By Ben McNicol

Airdrie boss Ian Murray hailed his Diamonds' dazzling second-half performance in their win against East Fife last night - and called on them to turn the screw in the League One title race.

Murray believes that the best has yet to come from his side as they look to spring a shock and take the crown, having looked out of contention a matter of weeks ago.

The Diamonds impressed in the second-half at the Penny Cars Stadium and Calum Gallagher’s sublime header was followed by a Dale Carrick rebound to seal three priceless points.

Murray was delighted with his side performance and is "raring to go" ahead of Saturday's trip to Firhill to face Partick Thistle.

He said: “The result was first and foremost the objective which we got in the end, but I thought our second-half performance was excellent.

"We had to trust our fitness, hunger and desire for the game of football.

"We always felt our fitness would come into play and we are looking really strong at the moment and are really fired up.

“The league is changing so much and the three points here is absolutely massive, not just for the top five but for the top four and possibly the title race as well as teams are dropping points all over the place."

Airdrie will now face Partick on Saturday, Montrose at home on Tuesday, Cove Rangers away next Saturday and finish up at home to Falkirk on Tuesday, May 4.

And Murray added: "I was just saying to the players that we’ve now got to turn the screw as it’s not yet been turned at Airdrie.

"We will go to Firhill on Saturday full of confidence, belief and are playing good football.

“We’ve got a really good squad at a very important time.

"The message to the players and everyone else is that we enjoy tonight but we have to keep going.”
