Airdrie artist shows unique guitar to cast of cult movie Quadrophenia

Airdrie friend-of-the-stars David McDonagh took the night train to mingle with Mods for a very special celebration.

The 34-year-old artist shared an audience with cast members of cult musical Mod movie Quadrophenia – and blew everyone away with his wonderful work.

David, who runs his own business, Lewy L. Paintings, and works on comic book art portraits and pop art, met actors including Phil Daniels, Leslie Ash and Toyah Willcox at the Quadrophenia 40th anniversary reunion event in Coventry.

He took along a guitar emblazoned with his image of Daniels’ lead character Jimmy which was autographed by the hugely impressed cast.

David then joined the group in recreating the famous image on the movie’s poster – filling in for Sting, who wasn’t in attendance, in the process.

David said: “I absolutely love Quadrophenia and when I found out about the 40th anniversary reunion I knew I had to be there.

“I travelled down to Coventry with the guitar in tow and managed to get my picture taken with the cast members on hand.

“They loved the artwork on the guitar, especially Phil who said it was a spot on recreation of Jimmy.

“It’s a day I won’t forget for a very long time.”

David regularly hobnobs with celebrities, including actors, wrestlers, footballers and musicians, and his work has earned high praise from the likes of Bryan Cranston, Liam Gallagher, Robert Carlyle and Ally McCoist.

Former Airdrie Academy pupil David added: “These are very exciting times for Lewy L. Paintings and hopefully the company has a bright future ahead.

“Working as an artist is my dream job; that’s what I wanted to be when I was at school but got it knocked out of me when I was told it wasn’t a ‘real job’.

“But I’ve proved that it is a real job and the timing was just right to become a full-time artist as I was juggling a full-time job with painting at night.

“I decided it was getting too much and handed my notice in and just went for it, with great support from fellow artists and the positive feedback from all of my family and friends.

“I have managed to meet some of the biggest names in the world of film, music, football and wrestling, many of whom have been real heroes of mine; but even now I still have to pinch myself when I’m lucky enough to chat with famous faces.

“It is absolutely great and I am loving every minute of it.”
