Airdrie artist pays tribute to Rangers legend Fernando Ricksen after sad passing

An Airdrie artist has paid a warm tribute to brave footballer Fernando Ricksen.

The former Rangers captain lost his fight with motor neurone disease last week at the age of just 43.

David McDonagh, who runs his own firm, Lewy L Paintings, contributed to Dutchman Ricksen’s fundraising work to help his lengthy battle against the disease – which affects the brain and nerves – by selling some of his eye-catching artwork.

David also had the pleasure of meeting Mr Ricksen – who received exemplary end-of-life care at Airdrie’s St Andrew’s Hospice – at a charity event in 2018, when he presented the delighted former midfield star with a fantastic portrait.

David, 34, said: “I was very saddened to hear the news that Fernando has passed away.

“He was a true fighter, captain, husband and father.

“I was lucky enough to meet and work with him in raising money to fight his disease and saw first-hand how strong a battle he put up against it.

“It was a pleasure to do my bit for the cause and meet with a legend like Fernando.

“He loved the painting and signed it for me, which was a real thrill.

“Seeing all of the tributes that have been paid to him since his passing, it just shows how highly Fernando was thought of; rest easy Fernando.”

Ricksen’s funeral will be held in Glasgow today with the procession set to pass Rangers’ Ibrox Stadium.

Meanwhile, David also met former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher in Manchester, as he rolled up to the rocker during an event marking the release of Gallagher’s latest solo album, Why Me? Why Not.

Gallagher is one of dozens of famous faces – including WWE wrestlers, actors like Bryan Cranston, musicians and footballers – to be wowed by David’s artwork.

David explained: “I have previously met Liam and he signed some of my paintings of the great man

“I love Liam and his music – and was a massive Oasis fan.

“It’s always very surreal when you’re up close, and get to share a word, with one of your heroes.”
