Airdrie 5, Clyde 0: Strikers at the double in a comfortable derby win

Calum Gallagher and Dale Carrick both bagged doubles as Airdrie routed toothless Clyde in the first League One derby of the season, at a freezing cold Penny Cars Stadium.

The Diamonds attacked the Bully Wee from the start and deservedly took a 3-0 lead into the interval, with Thomas Robert in particular causing problems.

Clyde offered glimpses of what they can do, and Airdrie keeper David Hutton had to make a smart save to deny David Goodwilie at 1-1, but they didn't really trouble their hosts.

Airdrie dominated the first half and Gallagher grabbed a double either side of a strike by Dale Carrick.

It only got worse for Clyde in the second half, and when Lloyd Robertson was penalised for a trip, Carrick grabbed his own second from the spot, and Kyle Connell added a late fifth.

Airdrie boss Ian Murray made two changes to the side that lost to Dumbarton last weekend, with Thomas Robert and Griffin Sabatini in for Kyle MacDonald and Craig Thomson, both of whom were on the bench.

Clyde also lost to Dumbarton in midweek, and Danny Lennon made four changes to his line-up, with Scott Rumsby, Lloyd Robertson, Kristoffer Syvertsen and Chris Johnston in for Mark Lamont, Ally Love, Josh Jack and Jay Henderson. They were also on the Bully Wee's bench.

Calum Gallagher scored twice for Airdrie (John Steven)

The Diamonds should have taken the lead in six minutes when Robert's cross from the right looked good for Gallagher, but the striker took a fresh-air swipe and Clyde keeper David Mitchell gathered, amid cries for 'hand ball' that were ignored by referee Chris Graham.

Airdrie had further claim waved away in 12 minutes, but it didn't look like Barry Cuddihy could get out of the way of Carrick's volley on the left corner of the box.

The hosts tried again in 22 minutes when Robert sent Gallagher through on the right, but Mitchell got a touch to divert it past the post.

But Airdrie did take the lead in 23 minutes when Leon McCann's cross from the left was headed in by Gallagher.

Clyde nearly drew level inside four minutes, but David Hutton mare a smart block to deny David Goodwillie's low effort, and the big striker headed over shortly afterwards from a Johnston cross.

Robert had been behind much of Airdrie's good work and when he stabbed a neat balll through the defence in 30 minutes it was perfect for Carrick to race onto and slam past Mitchell to make it 2-0.

the hosts had a chance to stretch their lead further in 36 minutes but Kyle Connell's free kick near the left corner flag was headed past the far post by Callum Fordyce.

Robert had a chance for Airdrie in 38 minutes, but sent an angled shot over the bar.

Gallagher grabbed his second of the game on the stroke of half-time, heading in Carrick's cross from the right.

Gallagher nearly grabbed his hat-trick inn 49 minutes when he met a McCann cross with a looping header, but sent it inches over.

Dale Carrick also got a double against Clyde (John Steven)

Carrick grabbed his second from the spot in 52 minutes when Lloyd Robertson was penalised for a trip and the striker rammed the spot-kick home.

Substitute Josh Jack provided a bit more energy up front but couldn't get past Hutton.

Connell deservedly got on the score-sheet as he slammed in a fifth from a Craig Thomson pass with seven minutes left.

Sub Dean Ritchie nearly added a sixth after being sent through on goal, but Mitchell saved well with his legs.
