Airdrie 0 Alloa 2: The Diamonds slump to disappointing defeat in Betfred Cup opener

Airdrie opened their competitive season with defeat to Alloa in the Betfred Cup.

Alan Trouten opened the scoring from the penalty spot after a controversial handball call, before a Robert Thomson header made sure of the Group H points.

The visitors applied all the opening pressure as the Diamonds struggled to find a foothold in their first competitive game in six months.

They got their reward after 13 minutes as Paul McKay was adjudged to have handled Kevin Cawley’s cross from the left by whistler Stephen Reid.

Former Albion Rovers midfielder Trouten stepped up to calmly bury the ball into the bottom left corner and send debuting Max Currie the wrong way.

The Wasps continued to have control of the game as a long ball from Liam Dick put Trouten through on goal after 23 minutes. The forward composed himself as he ran in on goal, but dragged his shot well wide of the post.

The hosts burst into life on the counter attack as neat work from Griffin Sabatini and McKay slipped in Ally Roy inside 31 minutes, but his lofted drive floated narrowly wide of Neil Parry’s right post.

Airdrie looked to test their Championship rivals from set-pieces as Craig Thomson’s corner found the head of skipper Sean Crighton, but the centre-back header just wide of the near post after 36 minutes.

However, the Indodrill men again came close moments later as Adam Brown beat Kyle MacDonald on the left wing, and his cross cannoned off the defender and almost snuck into the bottom corner. Currie got down quickly to prevent the close calls.

Callum Fordyce was next to worry Parry from a well-worked set-piece after 42 minutes but the former Airdrie keeper was quick to gather the ball low at his feet.

After the restart Dale Carrick came close to levelling the game as he met McKay's cross but it went narrowly wide.

Sub Calum Gallagher, on for the injured Ally Roy, also forced a good save out of Parry as he fizzled his shot from range towards the Wasps goal.

Gallagher was at the heart of the action when moments later he went down under a Scott Taggart challenge, however the referee waved away the appeals of the Broomfield men.

Peter Grant's side continued to threaten on the counter attack as Robert Thomson found space from the tight angle after a mazey run into the box, however his shot cannoned off of the near post.

Taggart found dangerous Thomson with a deep ball, and this time the attacker wouldn't be denied as he headed in the second after 67 minutes from close range.

As the Diamonds attempted to rescue the game, Thomas Robert attempted to test Parry from range however the signing from Montpellier dargged his shot from distance inside 83 minutes.
