Airbus planes could soon have bunk beds and playgrounds

Airbus planes could be built with bunk beds and playgrounds in the future.

The aerospace giant, which designs and makes wings for aircraft in Filton, has developed a new concept that would transform the way the cargo hold is used on planes.

The idea is to build sleeping quarters, business meeting rooms or children’s play areas inside moveable units that would fill the space usually occupied by cargo containers.

The concept has already scooped an international award for excellence in aircraft interior innovation.

Airbus worked with defence and engineering company Safran to create the concept, which has won the 2019 Crystal Cabin Award for their cabin concept.

The new passenger modules would be built so they were "easily interchangeable" with regular cargo containers if needed.

Sören Scholz, Airbus senior vice president of the cabin and cargo programme said: “Innovation is our main driver for success, and we are continuously striving to offer the latest innovative solutions to airlines and passengers worldwide.

"We look forward to further build on our experience in lower-deck solutions together with Airbus."

The Crystal Cabin Award is the leading international award for excellence in aircraft interior innovation and is sponsored by the city of Hamburg.

This year, more than 100 concepts from all over the world were presented across eight categories.
