Airbus confirms number of job cuts in Bristol as airline industry hit by pandemic

Airbus is planning to reduce its workforce in Filton by 295, the aeroplane manufacturer has confirmed.

The aerospace giant announced yesterday it is cutting 1,700 roles in the UK in what it described as the “gravest crisis” in the sector’s history.

The company, which employs around 3,000 people at its site in Bristol, said another 1,435 roles would also go from its plant in Broughton, North Wales.

Airbus said the split reflected “the significant impact” the pandemic has had on the UK's commercial-aircraft manufacturing activities, which are concentrated in Broughton.

It also said it would “meet regularly” with its trade union partners in the UK over the decision.

Airbus chief executive Guillaume Faury said yesterday the measures the company had taken so far had enabled Airbus "to absorb the initial shock of this global pandemic."

He explained: "Now, we must ensure that we can sustain our enterprise and emerge from the crisis as a healthy, global aerospace leader, adjusting to the overwhelming challenges of our customers.

"To confront that reality, we must now adopt more far-reaching measures. Our management team and our Board of Directors are fully committed to limiting the social impact of this adaptation."

Airbus said it hoped the job cuts would include voluntary departures, early retirement, and long-term partial unemployment schemes where appropriate.

Unite assistant general secretary Steve Turner added: “This is yet another act of industrial vandalism and a terrible insult to our incredible UK workforce who deserve so much better from our government.

“Over the weeks of this crisis, this country’s aerospace jobs have gone hand over fist yet not one word of support or act of assistance has been forthcoming from the Government."
