Airbnb to offer free housing to 20,000 Afghan refugees globally

Airbnb is to offer free housing to 20,000 Afghan refugees across the globe following the Taliban's takeover of the country.

The online accommodation platform is seeking assistance from hosts to help those who have fled.

Chief executive Brian Chesky said the firm felt a "responsibility to step up" in response to "one of the biggest humanitarian crises of our time".

Posting on Twitter, he said: "If you’re willing to host a refugee family, reach out and I’ll connect you with the right people here to make it happen!

"I hope this inspires other business leaders to do the same. There's no time to waste."

The UN Refugee Agency said last month that an estimated 270,000 Afghans had been newly displaced inside the country since January, primarily due to insecurity and violence.

It brought the total uprooted population to more than 3.5 million.

Airbnb has a history of providing free shelter to those in need, housing 75,000 people fleeing or responding to a crisis since 2012, including Covid-19 health workers, earthquake and fire evacuees, responders and refugees.

Hosts can sign up for the programme here.

Airbnb operates in approximately 100,000 cities in almost every country and region across the world.

The UK government has said it will take up to 20,000 vulnerable Afghans over the coming years as part of its resettlement scheme.
