Airbnb holiday flats to be built above Bury’s record shop

Holiday flats designed for visitors to The Met theatre are to be created in a listed Bury town centre building.

Plans have been approved to convert offices above the Wax and Beans café and vinyl record store on Market Street into two flats, which will be Airbnb apartments for hire.

The flats, which are directly opposite the Met, will be on the second floor above the café, which for many years was the town’s branch of Nationwide Building Society.

The flats, which are directly opposite the Met, will be on the second floor above the café, which for many years was the town’s branch of Nationwide Building Society.

The application was lodged by Louise Jackson, from Wax and Beans.

The application for change of use of the premises from offices to holiday flats, states: “The use of the second floor will be two Airbnb apartments.

“They will be directly opposite is The Met, which provides live music and entertainment and is frequented by people from other towns and cities.

“Many people would use the Airbnb accommodation.

“The entire property is a Grade II listed building which means the building is nationally important and of special interest.

“The physical works will have a minimal impact and the application seeks to consent to alter the rear elevation only.

“It does not seek to alter the character and elevation of the front which is the main asset of the listed building.”

Built between 1850 and 1860, the building was grade II listed in 1985 and is within the town centre conservation area.

A planning officer report into the application, said: “The application states that the proposed use of the upper floor holiday lets would help support the viability and longevity of the existing business and the use and upkeep of the building.

“The proposed development would bring back into use a vacant upper floor within a shopping and town centre location.

“This part of Bury is also heralded as an area of culture and tourism and the proposed development would be ideally placed to benefit from the local
amenities and areas of historic interest.”

Wax and Beans is Bury’s only independent record store.

They stock new and used vinyl over two floors, and serve drinks and cakes.

There is a turntable at the shop for customers to play records through headphones.

Permission for the change of use was granted by Bury Council on September 9.
